The Differences Between Stainless Steel and Carbon Steel

2024-07-11

Many customers will come to consult us, saying which is the better material of stainless steel or carbon steel? Now, the steel casting foundry will tell you about the difference between carbon steel and stainless steel, and now there are more carbon steel castings and stainless steel castings, but what is the difference between the two, and what is the difference in performance between stainless steel and carbon steel?

1. There will be a difference in color between the two: because stainless steel contains more chromium and nickel metal, the appearance is basically silver and bright. Carbon steel contains more carbon and iron alloys, and less other metal elements, so the appearance is mainly the color of iron, which will be a little dark.

2. The carbon element is different between the two: the amount of carbon in the steel is the main factor that determines the performance of the steel, and under normal circumstances, the steel casting foundry will not add a large number of other elements, and the carbon content is generally less than two percent. However, in order to maintain good corrosion resistance, the carbon content of stainless steel will be relatively low, and it will not exceed 1.2% at most.

3. The corrosion resistance between the two is different: because the amount of alloying elements in carbon steel is relatively small, the corrosion resistance will not be as good as that of stainless steel, which contains more chromium-nickel metal, so the corrosion resistance is relatively strong.

4. The content of alloying elements between the two is different: the alloying elements contained in carbon steel are still relatively small, and the contents of manganese, sulfur, silicon and phosphorus of other elements are also not much. There are still many alloying elements in stainless steel.

5. The texture between the two is different: the surface of stainless steel will be very smooth because it contains more other metal elements, and the surface of carbon steel will be a little rough because of its more iron content.
